Lancelot in Lyonesseby Tim Porter
Author's noteThis is the sequel to "The Marvels of Merlin", concluding the story of King Arthur and his Knights. And yet it is only partly a sequel. The pantomime format, so ideal for the jokey, bawdy world of Geoffrey of Monmouth and "Culhwch and Olwen" (the sources for "Merlin") does not really fit the "Morte d'Arthur" material which I use in the present play. The shift from Pagan to Christian symbols also puts the play in a different world. I have tried to mark this difference by shifting the music into the words, so to speak. You won't find "Lancelot in Lyonesse" bursting with song and dance, but the play itself is constructed like music. The Grail Quest and Arthur's Passing are areas fraught with ambiguity and confusion, and I feel it is easy to smother the issues in excessive solemnity; comedy, therefore, is the medium of this play, in an effort to throw light into some dark corners.
